Partnerships

Those enjoying outdoor sports and recreation are particularly at risk of harmful exposure to ultraviolet radiation during the months of September to March. Organisers and committees can do much to support individuals’ efforts to protect themselves from sunburn.

Tennis New Zealand

Tennis New Zealand, tennis' national body, became a SunSmart partner in 2008. The main focus is the adoption of SunSmart policies across the organisation and encouraging sun safe practices, especially among junior players.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand

SunSmart works in partnership with Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) to help keep surf lifeguards safe in the sun. SLSNZ has adopted measures such as changing the surf lifeguard uniform by making the shirts long-sleeved and collared and the hats wide brimmed.

Canterbury Tennis

Canterbury Tennis’ commitment to sun safety over many years is evident in its practices such as promoting sun safety to the coaches, teachers and parents of children in the junior tennis programmes.

New Zealand Racing Board

New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) has made significant progress in their commitment to provide shade at their Summer Festival events. They also make public announcements throughout the day over the public address system reminding people to be SunSmart.

Being a SunSmart organisation

One of the most significant actions an organisation can take to protect its members and visitors is to adopt a sun protection policy. Policies consider factors such as:

  • shade provision
  • timetabling of activities
  • positive role-modelling
  • promotion of SunSmart clothing, hats and sunscreen.

Summer is a time of many outdoor activities including events, tournaments and regular training sessions. There are lots of ways to protect those attending from harmful exposure to UV radiation. Check out the Running an event and SunSmart policy sections for more information.
