Organisers of outdoor summer events, sports and activities can help to reduce the risk of sunburn among event-goers, players, officials and spectators. All organisers know of the need to consider and manage all possible risks to ensure the health and safety of their event or activity, and sunburn should be considered as one of these risks. Skin cancer is largely caused by harmful exposure to UV radiation – this means it is preventable.
Running a SunSmart event or activity is not just about providing a bottle of sunscreen. It’s about encouraging a sun-safe culture where a variety of measures are in place to help protect people from the potentially life-threatening and disfiguring consequences of harmful exposure to UV radiation and skin cancer.
There are lots of things you can do - some of these are easy and some require a little effort - but it's worth it.
